Girlfriends-in-Ministry: Fried Pie

I’ve been in ministry long enough to know there must be a place for space. An interval of emptiness, whether by time or by distance, is necessary for a healthy leader. If you’re married to the leader, <Ding-Ding-Ding> you win the honor for being a leader-by-marriage!

In the early years of student ministry with my honey, my life was consumed by “working for God.” I was too busy to notice my energy and zeal for life and Lord was being borrowed from the next day until I had depleted all reserves and run out of credit.

I was burned-out. I was wasted. I was fried.

My lack of love for anybody and anything was just a symptom of a lack of space.

After being commissioned the disciples were sent out with power to preach repentance, teach His words, cast out demons and heal the sick. When they returned to give a report, the endless ways to remain busy with ministry did not even yield time to eat. “Then Jesus said, “Let’s go (come apart) to a place where we can be alone and get some rest” (Mark 6:31).

If we don’t “come apart,” we will eventually fall apart.

Jesus knew the necessity of space. Space is needed to rest our body and mind. Space is where we replenish our spirit with fresh provisions of His Word. In this space is when renewal takes place.

When you discover you're lost in lethargy...

When apathy replaces passion...

When your perspective is skewed by negativity... Find a place for space.
