Run With Nat

Ever run with a 13 year old boy? I have and live to tell the tale!

It started with Nathaniel's desire to accompany his dad, aunt and uncle in the Bataan Memorial Death March for 26.2 miles in the desert of New Mexico. The tale ends and begins with Dad taking his son's welfare into account. He's a good dad.

Nat -as he'll be called for this adventure- wanted to do something. This is where I enter the story. "What do you think about doing a --" before I could get the word out of my mouth, Nat blurts, "a HALF!"

"You know that's 13.1 miles, right?"
"Yes! Half of a full."
"Ok. It's gonna take training."
"I'll do it! I want to do this!"

With a small window for training before he and his family leave the country for a couple of years, we worked on a training calendar to strengthen core, arms, legs and get miles under our proverbial belt. He was a bright and willing student ready to attempt whatever the schedule listed. Our runs were a constant conversation of goals, health, nutrition and a battle of the wills. I won those!

During the last long run before tapering to save our legs for the #RunWithNat Virtual Bataan Half Marathon, our convo turned to motivation.

"Nathaniel, I haven't even asked WHY you're wanting to do this run. What is your motivation?"
Ready for a description of how and when and why, I let it settle. He was quiet. Then, "My dad."

I waited thinking he would add more (because this boy likes to talk). He didn't. So, we let it land right there. My dad.

Saturday morning white with frost, a beautiful Tennessee sunrise and turkeys stretch themselves as members from our local running club, Mt Juliet Flyers, sign in to run with the 13 year old. Dad, Mom and sisters organize the hydration station and motivational signs. The national anthem rings out over the park, hands over hearts and eyes on an American flag at half mast. It's time.

Ready. Set. Go! Nat sets the pace. We are doing 2:1 intervals. Two minute easy pace with a one minute walking rest interval. The beeper sounds and we are back at running. Following the white line, we round the track to the "Horn of Africa," a nubby little turning point back to the original track. Round and round to easy introductions and conversations of the Batman vs Superman movie and upcoming races. Before Nat realizes, we are at 7 miles!

The temp is higher. The sunshine and effort have warmed us. Other runners and walkers and supporters arrive to cheer Nat to victory. Finally, it's the last mile.

"Here we go! This is it!"
"Not many your age have ever done 13.1 miles!"
"Way to go!"
"You've got this!"
"Keep running!"
"Donuts are coming!"
"Hello, Stubborn."
"Run through the pain!"
"Are you ready to sprint to the finish like you said?"

And, he did to Dad and a big fat finisher's medal from Full Medal Runs supporting Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund helping military personnel suffering the effects of traumatic brain injuries (TBI) and psychological health (PH) issues.

Nat says he will miss running with me. He made me a running coach, if only for this one time. I will miss our runs and talks and battle of the wills and thoughts of donuts!

REFIT LoveRules Challenge Day 6

Today's #LoveRules has two parts to it, but you can handle it!

LOVE CHALLENGE #5: ASK A QUESTION. THEN LISTEN.

It's one thing to ask someone how someone is doing, but it's a whole other ballgame to ask an intentional question about someone's life. In getting to know people, it's easy to keep asking "How are you?" and get the weekly surface update, but never get any deeper. What a game changer it could be if we asked people REAL questions, like:

**What's something you're excited about?
**How did you feel when ______ happened?
**What do you need most from other people this week?
When we ask real questions, we'll build real #community.

The second and KEY aspect is to listen, and #listen WELL. Listening is NOT -thinking through what you're going to say next -zooming in on something on their face -mentally writing your to-do list -trying to come up with advice to give them before they're even done talking.

That last one is sneaky because it definitely feels like listening. Listening is giving your full, selfless attention to try to understand what someone else is saying. Listening is remembering.

Think about what your specific community could look like if everyone involved asked REAL questions and became REAL listeners.
What kind of questions are you asking? How are you responding to others?

SHARE on social media adding @refitrev + #LoveRules. You could get a great big ole Love Bomb valued at $100 dropped on ya!

REFIT LoveRules Challenge Day 3

This is a hard one, y'all. No one said that ‪#‎LoveRules‬ were easy, and today's rule is most definitely not. All month long we're discussing ways to BUILD COMMUNITY and intentionally love others, and this rule might not seem like a Love Rule, but it is.

LOVE RULE #2:
BE WILLING TO
BE CHALLENGED

Whether you're in a **leadership position, an **online influencer, a **fitness instructor, a **mom/dad, an **employee, or **a teacher...you must willing to be challenged. Why? Because in that place of challenge you GROW...and so do others!

Look, it's hard to admit you're wrong. >:(  It's hard to receive negative feedback. It's difficult to watch your competition soar. It's uncomfortable to disagree with a co-worker. But in each of these situations, a deeper understanding and wisdom takes root and allows you to grow in the right direction.

Your willingness to be challenged will produce growth, courage and, quite possibly, forgiveness. There's something endearing when others witness you yield instead of demand rights due to your position.

REFIT LoveRules Challenge Day 1

Most know I'm a certified REFIT® Instructor, but did ya know REFIT® is more than just fitness?

REFIT® is a community in which love rules. That may sound strange coming from a fitness company, but here's the deal:

FITNESS CHANGES BODIES,
 COMMUNITY CHANGES HEARTS.

  • We believe the heart is a muscle and a soul, we focus on both. One way we focus on the heart as a soul is by building community within our fitness classes. We're often asked "HOW do you build community?" and this month we are answering that question by talking about cultivating a community in which #LoveRules.
  • Each day, we'll provide practical tips on how to love those around you and go deeper in your connections with people. We think everyone could use a few more #LoveRules in life, right?
  • OH AND JUST WAIT! If you SHARE the posts on social media (facebook, twitter, instagram, pinterest, etc.) and use the hashtag #LoveRules and tag @refitrev, throughout the month of June, you'll be entered to win a huge love bomb filled with a $50 gift card to the REFIT® shop, an exclusive (not even available online, yet) REFIT water bottle and a "favorites" gift from each REFIT® Founder (Angela, Catherine & Emily = ACE). That's a whole lotta love, y'all!

We can't wait to make this #LoveRules journey with you this month! To get yourself entered into the challenge, GO ---> FOLLOW @refitrev on social media platforms (facebook, twitter, instagram, pinterest, etc.) and...
---> SHARE this and other REFIT® posts you see today (and each day on social media) using #LoveRules and @refitrev.

Stay tuned...

December Advent Week 2

Monthly fitness or food or photo challenges have been part of my new lifestyle for the past couple of years. But, it's December and those of the childlike heart await the arrival of Christmas and Santa and presents. The only challenge is to not sneak a peek! There have been eleven challenging months. December needs no challenge. December is expectant. December is celebration. December is the crossing off of days to something grand!

I choose to mark the advent of Christmas and the New Year with words of importance and contemplating how I respond to those words, daily. Will you sit with me to mull these words? Will you allow them to unlock a puzzle box inside your spirit preparing you for the future?

If we should accidentally drop a day, we will not sweat it, but will turn around from our too-busy stride to reclaim the word and the beautiful gifts of God's thoughts He has waiting just for us.

Adding Value

While social media tends to pander our self-regard with everything from mundane to once-in-a-lifetime events, let's consider shifting the focus toward others. I am just as indulgent as the next vegetarian in sharing what was on my all-day menu for #MeatlessMonday.

Hey, Jack, what's wrong with posting innumerable pix of cute puppies and baby elephants? Nothing, I say! Absolutely nothing!

I'm issuing a challenge -of sorts- to all you bloggers, Facebookers, Instagramers, Tweeters, Viners, Tumblr-ites and YouTubertarians to add value to your followers. Make it for a day. Make it for a week. Make it your next big milestone post!

What does that look like?

Welpst...it looks like encouraging with words and photos, "likes," asking questions, offering helpful hints and posting about something that benefits the locals or those with similar interests. Avoid cutting remarks or even responding to negativity with negativity where all of social media can see.

Remember, emotion and voice inflection do not carry through posts, unless you use "!!!" and ALL CAPS!!!! Typically a person will read a response using their own filter. If I have a cynical disposition, chances are I will read a post viewed through my pessimistic filter.

People struggle on a daily basis with everyday stuff. Let's, You & I, not subtract from our online friends' esteem. Instead, let's be the bright spot elevating them and adding value to their lives. You don't have to be a know-it-all, simply defer to another.

Whether we have 20 or 200,000 followers, we can add value with our platforms.

Here's to #sharingselfies! Join me?

ImpACT Challenge 2014!

Wanna stay ACTivated?

Starting Sunday night, January 12, a stress-free, do-able nutrition & fitness challenge will be posted on a private ImpACT Challenge 2014 Facebook page and will run through April 12. This can be added to your current workout plan or become your plan to help you stick to your New Year’s goals with a supportive online group who knows “Nothing Changes Until You ACT!

Here’s how it goes…

Join the private ImpACT Challenge 2014 Facebook page. (Message me on Facebook so I can add you.) However, if you don't do Facebook, feel free to post on this blog and we'll work something out!

Check back on the ImpACT Challenge 2014 page (or here) each Sunday night for the nutrition and fitness goal for the week.

• That night or the next day, set a realistic weekly “ImpACT” goal based on your activity goal for that week. You can include your type of fitness into the goal. Post your ImpACT goal (in points) on the private ImpACT Challenge 2014 Facebook page (or here). You get a point for every 10 minutes of your fitness activity (CrossFit, strength, biking, swimming, Zumba, etc.) or 1 point for every mile ran/walked.

10 minutes of your activity = 1 ImpACT Point
1 mile of walking, jogging, running = 1 ImpACT Point

• Then, as you rack up the points, post how many you earned for the day. Example: If I goaled 20 ImpACT Points for the week on Monday and did 30 minutes of CrossFit on Tuesday, it would look like this → 3/20. The next day you may jog for 4 miles. Your post would read 7/20 adding the new 4 points to the 3 from Tuesday. And so on, until you reach your goal!

Each of Sunday's nutrition and fitness challenges can be a supplement to your weekly ImpACT Points goals. If you're a walker or P90X enthusiast, consider adding the weekly nutrition and fitness challenges to your weekly workout plan!

Be sure to post your goal each week and post accomplishments! We will have RANDOM weekly/monthly drawings for prizes for those posting! Apologies in advance to challengers residing outside the USA who will not be eligible for prizes.

Who's ready to make an ImpACT on their life?
