Raise Your Gaze

07.07.19.  When Terry and I extended our running mileage from three miles to five miles, there was a specific course we would use to keep the workout interesting. It's nothing special and it's not the course we are eager to get to. The noise of the traffic beside us is too loud for music and the exhaust fumes can be sucked in when we are sucking at the air for oxygen.

The real reason we use this out-and-back sidewalk course is for the hills, hills and more hills. Oh and hill repeats. Were you aware there are rolling hills in Tennessee?

Running on a flat track is perfectly fine for an easier run or for when the weather is not cooperating for longer mileage. Simply put, a flat course adds mileage, but doesn't build endurance. Running hills tests the runner's training, requires the runner to make adjustments as she climbs and challenges the runner to lift her gaze to the unchanging focal point as she moves forward to the top.

As a newbie runner back in the spring of 2013, I had no desire to complete a full marathon. That's 26.2 miles of torture! My body did not know 26.2 miles, because it had trained only for the three miles. My mind could not comprehend what longer distances would feel like, because I had trained for the short distances only. Initially, to run farther meant spending more time while feeling weak and winded. There was no motivation inside of me to pursue anything other than what I was doing. That was until after the first race I experienced where the crowd encourages every runner to the finish. As soon as my foot crossed over that magic line, something inside of me awakened to challenge. I knew my training would take on an intentionality for something more difficult.
Running in the White Tank Mountains

Training strengthens the body. The discipline of longer distances more frequently, the addition of core and weight-bearing exercises, and changes to my nutrition were part of the new training. I found a coach who knew how to care and call out. I studied form of known distance runners. I researched equipment and the elevation of my next race.

But my hip joints hurt. My kneecap felt like it was warbling with a sensation near pain. After a quick evaluation, the physical therapist, a runner, immediately recognized what this newbie runner did not. I thought it was a joke and quickly scanned the room for a hidden camera when he gave me the diagnosis.

"Runner's Butt. You have Runner's Butt." To any girl, this sounds like a win! But, no. It's a symptom of weakness. In fact, the warbling kneecap was further confirmation that my hips were weak. He prescribed simple exercises to be repeated at daily intervals. In a few weeks, the exercises proved successful.

Adjustments must be made during the ascent. Running on a flat course is one foot in front of the other. Pick 'em up. Put 'em down. Keep breathing. There is more to it, but if a person can move in an upright position, she can do a flat course. It is when the incline under her feet begins to rise, the same muscles are called on to engage differently.

Not only had the PT discovered my weak hips, he explained the need to engage muscles differently for the difficulty. It seems my short body is built for endurance. Since those thighs I have detested since puberty are quite strong, it was only natural that I engaged them while running uphill. However, the proper muscle group to engage for climbing hills is the set I sit upon. The glutes! They stabilize and power the movement up with shorter steps. By strengthening and engaging, the adjustments are learned to carry the runner up and over the hill.

Raise your gaze. There is another technique the runner must employ for running hills:
head up - eyes up. The running coach I continue to ask for wisdom taught me this lesson. The top of a hill does not change. Since we run to where our eyes are focused, it makes sense to keep our eyes fixed on the top of the hill instead of on the road and on our feet during the arduous climb. By lifting our head, even slightly, our capacity for oxygen-rich air increases by lengthening the torso to take in more air, because our lungs are not in a squished position.

You're ahead of me and have paced the running lessons to our spiritual lives. I knew you would! Let's review.

In this life trials will rise up making our journey difficult, but not impossible. As we dig into the Word of Truth (the Bible) and look to spending time in relationship with God -the God of the impossible, He will help strengthen our spirit and teach us how to engage the truths found in the Word. The truth like this one found in Psalm 121:

"I will lift my eyes to the hills. Where does my help come from? My help (and strength and breath) comes from the Lord, who made the heavens and earth. He, who does not sleep, will not let your foot fall (or fail)."

I encourage you to read this tiny chapter with its eight power-packed verses for yourself, this evening. Are you ready to get up earlier or abandon stupid tv shows opting for time spent with God?

Raise your gaze, my friend. It is time to be intentional with your training.

MOVE

"She was doing life from a position of complacency. Routines with little to no impact. Flipping the calendar month after month and year after year. Nothing to challenge her. Ugly, restless comfort. Then, life happened."

"Change was imminent. Change was necessary. Change was uncomfortable. Change required movement. Movement required a discomfort. Moving her mouth beyond her negative words. Moving her mind beyond selfish objections. Moving her soul beyond its safe borders. Moving her body beyond its comfortable limits. Moving and moving and moving more."

In exploring new places for moving, She found events for movement were countless! There were events for moving with corrals and finish lines and medals! What?! Medals just for moving? PERFECT! Crowds cheered each mover whether they were fast or slow. There were venues for the moving in small towns and big cities and in national parks. The moving drew more people who were moving! Because some of those who were moving had similar life stories of complacency, bonds of friendship developed. “Come move with us in another event!”

In the movement, She learned there was freedom to experience the flight of joy. Her thirst to find others to learn from was whetted. Passion quietly moved in when knowledge was gained and when her knowledge was poured out for others to experience. Her hope to help others find movement was lit and getting brighter. Her fondness for moving had ripple effects among friends. They, too, desired to move, but did not know how.

Soon, a tribe of those who were moving differently was discovered. She learned their movement and began to teach others who were afraid to move. Their fear had left them temporarily paralyzed. They never considered their movement beauty-filled. They thought they were good enough to move. Of all things, they had believed the lie they were too heavy to move.

She explored new ways of moving to improve her movement. She found benefits of yielding to temporary discomfort so the movement could go on for miles and years of miles. There were other movers who offered tips and strategies. Still, other movers provided real inspiration and real products to keep her moving and looking cute while moving in her real body with its imperfections.
One day, reality presented itself when She heard herself shout, “Moving is winning!” Others smiled and took up the charge! She was moving to win…not the winning of the first-to-arrive. No. This movement was not toward a single destination, but forever on a journey of daily winning destinations. Daily wins over fear and over the idontwannas. Daily victories of courage over discouragement. Daily change, “the beautiful discomfort” of those who choose to move.

My First Running Skirt

2016 Hot Chocolate 15K ... 14 degrees at Finish Line!
After my hubby's heart attack in December 2012, we launched into a desperate change of lifestyle. Nutrition and fitness were the chosen shovels to dig our unhealthy selves out of the poor physical pit. He liked running. I did not, but knew I had to get moving.

I joined a dance fitness class which met three times weekly and hid in the shadows of the back row, each week, wearing long sleeves and long athleisure pants hoping not to embarrass myself. I was overweight and weak and, by the first 20 minutes, out-of-breath, but I kept at it determined not to be a statistic of failure.

Although I did not notice the physical changes, by spring my body was getting stronger and leaner! Hubby was going out for a run and to his surprise (and mine), I asked to join him. Something short of a miracle happened, that day. I did 3 miles feeling strong and enjoying being out with him with the sunshine on my face! We kept running, together, on the days I wasn't doing a fitness class. We weren't fast and our form incorrect, but we were moving!

That's me in the doorway wearing the blue Heartbreaker Skirt
with a few members of the local running group!
Summer cooled down to nice running weather through November. It was during this time, I stumbled upon a Facebook promotion of the Holiday Challenge led by Running Coach Jenny Hadfield, co-author of Running for Mortals. Each week runners, walkers, fitness enthusiasts logged miles and "miles." Each mile walked or run counted an actual mile. A "mile" was earned for each 10 minutes of exercise (cycling, yoga, dance fitness, etc.). Weekly challenges were issued with prizes to be won or randomly drawn from our group of challengers.

One such week the requirement to win the prize was to post why you should be chosen. The prize was donated by Skirt Sports® founded by Nicole DeBoom. What an eye-opener! I never knew there was such cute, stylish and modest fitness clothes for someone like me. The models on the website were real women with curves who were running and active!

Something rose up in me. I popped my knuckles and crafted a paragraph to capture the attention of Coach Jenny's elves as to why I needed either the sports bra or the running skirt. By Sunday, I had received an email stating I was the winner of the blue Heartbreaker Skirt!

The staff at Skirt Sports® was helpful and didn't crush my shaky confidence, but supported me in choosing the right size...a smaller size than what I would have ordered. Then, I nervously waited for the thing of beauty to arrive hoping it would fit and I would look decent.

Holy Cow! An Oscar trophy dipped in gold could not have been more treasured than my first running skirt. The shirred skirt draped off my healthy backside in a flattering way and offered the coverage across the crotch I needed. The two pockets under the skirt were genius! I didn't even know I needed them until I started stuffing them full of, well, stuff! The description on the website read: You're a heartbreaker... dream maker... and we know that you were born to rock this skirt. My response? YES, I AM!

It's 2017, and Hubby and I are still running and walking and hiking, together. He makes me smile when he says, "I've been chasing her skirt for a long time!" Now, I have many more Skirt Sports® skirts for him to chase, but my first skirt holds a special place in my heart.

#31DaysofSkirtSports Week 1

Why YES, I AM a Skirt Sports Ambassador Captain! Earlier, this year, I was selected to represent this company because I believe in their mission and their products! While Skirt Sports offers shorts and capris for the real women, it's the skirt that drew me in to "Convert to Skirt." I love the compression gear underneath the skirt, which keeps the jiggly from being all wiggly! And, at age 52, I require coverage --
cover-age! (I'll leave that one, right there)

Skirt Sports converts, everywhere, are getting in on July's #31DaysofSkirtSports. Let me take you through my first 7 days via my social media accounts...

Day 1. TGIF - Freshly laundered Skirt Sports because #realwomenmove in the Tennessee sunshine!

(Some of my Skirt Sports swag. The grey visor is a BOCO visor for Skirt Sports with a headband at the front to soak up sweat.)

I suggest drip drying your tech gear, but you can always toss it in the dryer on low.

I'm ok with that!

Day 6. After a day of leading REFIT® fitness classes, foam rolling is tonight's hurt-so-good RECOVERY tool on tight calves and sore glutes.

#stay dry #alldaylong because #realwomenmove

(Wearing Happy Girl skirt, Tantrum print)

Day 7. Isolate other muscle groups for whole body fitness  = CrossTrain‬
Runners tend to focus on strengthening the legs when all over conditioning makes for a stronger runner. I targeted my core, this evening, doing mountain climbers, planks, sit ups, roll ups, crunches, and this modified version of mountain climber.
TIP: My wrists don't have a full range of motion, so I elevate using weights when holding a plank or doing mountain climbers.

(Wearing my Skirt Sports Ambassador swag a.k.a online as the "Don't Sweat It Long Sleeve" which is soft as buttaaaahh!)

Totally authorized to extend to you a 20% discount by entering COP20 at checkout, at least through December 2016!

Run With Nat

Ever run with a 13 year old boy? I have and live to tell the tale!

It started with Nathaniel's desire to accompany his dad, aunt and uncle in the Bataan Memorial Death March for 26.2 miles in the desert of New Mexico. The tale ends and begins with Dad taking his son's welfare into account. He's a good dad.

Nat -as he'll be called for this adventure- wanted to do something. This is where I enter the story. "What do you think about doing a --" before I could get the word out of my mouth, Nat blurts, "a HALF!"

"You know that's 13.1 miles, right?"
"Yes! Half of a full."
"Ok. It's gonna take training."
"I'll do it! I want to do this!"

With a small window for training before he and his family leave the country for a couple of years, we worked on a training calendar to strengthen core, arms, legs and get miles under our proverbial belt. He was a bright and willing student ready to attempt whatever the schedule listed. Our runs were a constant conversation of goals, health, nutrition and a battle of the wills. I won those!

During the last long run before tapering to save our legs for the #RunWithNat Virtual Bataan Half Marathon, our convo turned to motivation.

"Nathaniel, I haven't even asked WHY you're wanting to do this run. What is your motivation?"
Ready for a description of how and when and why, I let it settle. He was quiet. Then, "My dad."

I waited thinking he would add more (because this boy likes to talk). He didn't. So, we let it land right there. My dad.

Saturday morning white with frost, a beautiful Tennessee sunrise and turkeys stretch themselves as members from our local running club, Mt Juliet Flyers, sign in to run with the 13 year old. Dad, Mom and sisters organize the hydration station and motivational signs. The national anthem rings out over the park, hands over hearts and eyes on an American flag at half mast. It's time.

Ready. Set. Go! Nat sets the pace. We are doing 2:1 intervals. Two minute easy pace with a one minute walking rest interval. The beeper sounds and we are back at running. Following the white line, we round the track to the "Horn of Africa," a nubby little turning point back to the original track. Round and round to easy introductions and conversations of the Batman vs Superman movie and upcoming races. Before Nat realizes, we are at 7 miles!

The temp is higher. The sunshine and effort have warmed us. Other runners and walkers and supporters arrive to cheer Nat to victory. Finally, it's the last mile.

"Here we go! This is it!"
"Not many your age have ever done 13.1 miles!"
"Way to go!"
"You've got this!"
"Keep running!"
"Donuts are coming!"
"Hello, Stubborn."
"Run through the pain!"
"Are you ready to sprint to the finish like you said?"

And, he did to Dad and a big fat finisher's medal from Full Medal Runs supporting Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund helping military personnel suffering the effects of traumatic brain injuries (TBI) and psychological health (PH) issues.

Nat says he will miss running with me. He made me a running coach, if only for this one time. I will miss our runs and talks and battle of the wills and thoughts of donuts!

Sweat PInk Summer Instagram Challenge RECAP

From July 1 to July 10, I participated in the Sweat Pink Summer Instagram Challenge sponsored by FitApproach and fellow Sweat Pink Ambassador Sister, Jill Conyers, sharing photos with other #sweatpink sisters! Such a fun, healthy and active bunch! Here's the recap of my ten days...

 Day 1: Fave Summer Snack
I like cooling off on the inside with Edy's Outshine Pomegranate Popsicles! That's #pinksnacking!

Day 2: Fave Workout Gear
I love running in skirts! They are cool, comfy and provide the modesty I require when I #runlikeagirl! I have several skirts. If you're interested, check out Skirt Sports!

Day 3: Fave Vacation
My fave is always my last vaction. This pic was on a hike up out of Keystone, Colorado, last summer. Once in sight of the mountains, my body and mind relax. I just had to use one of my fave quotes by John Muir.

Day 4: July 4th
Spent the morning with Terry hiking 2.7 miles in Stones River National Battlefield in Murfreesboro, Tennessee! We learned about the bloodiest 3 days of the Civil War in December 1862, when 81,000 troops gathered and almost 25,000 died.

Day 5: Fave Yoga Pose or Stretch
I don't know what this thing is called! I think I saw Coach Jenny Hadfield do it on YouTube. In this pic: left leg crossed over right leg which is bent and being held behind the knee with left hand (usually both hands, but I had the camera in my right hand). Allow left hip, glute and IT Band to open up. Then, change legs. I prob made it sound so confusing! But, it hurts so good like a #bendypretzel!

Day 6: Sweat Pink in Nature
If by "in nature" you mean... "Outside Pool" on a Sunday for a Preacher's wife while helping my vacationing neighbors... HA! This is my #dayofrest after I fed my neighbors' animals.

Day 7: Fave Way to Sweat Pink
...is during my fun Zumba zweat hour with fun friends! Zumba fitness has and continues to make me stronger for running. I tried to draw attention the sweat drops all over my head!

Day 8: Fave Book
My current fave read is by author and seasoned leader, Jodi Detrick, who believes "If you have the heart, you can learn the skill." Develop 10 Leadership Qualities for Enduring & Endearing Influence. I did a review on this blog. See Book Review at Book Review: The Jesus-Hearted Woman.

Day 9: Sweat Pink with a Friend
Terry, my [best] friend & hubby, of almost 29 years and I went for a run! He is my inspiration and motivation!

I did a blog post for Newbie Runners and posted the pic of my Brooks Pure Glycerin lightweight runners with the Sweat Pink Ambassador Shoelaces!

Day 10: Fave Summer Activity
For the final post of the challenge, I chose to go barefoot! #nakedtoes #southerngirl #chickenmcnuggettoes #crinklecutfriestoes #summertoes #happytoes and #sweatpinktoes!!!

Thanks, Jill & Fit Approach, for 10 days of summer fun in the sun!
