100 Days of Summer 43-46/100

07.16.19.  Catch up. Sometimes, I'm caught in a whirlpool of perpetual catch up. How about you?

From sun up to sun down. From Monday to Monday. From meal planning to meal prepping to meals-on-the-table. From laundry room to bathroom. You get the picture. You're probably spinning around inside your own whirlpool.

Hubby and I are in different churches most weekends for ministry, which usually entails Saturday travel. This has been our lifestyle for years. At some point, our home needs attention and underwear needs washing. While many do all the house stuff on their weekends, my Monday is everyone's Saturday. Monday is for catching up on all things that keep us going and in good standing with our neighbors.

Occasionally, Monday is too busy from a too full list of catch up items and Monday stuff gets pushed into Tuesday. And, there you have it -- today is Tuesday which finds me able to sit in front of the computer, finally, to catch up on #100daysofSummer.

The EMBRACED book devotions by Lysa TerKeurst that I haven't blogged about over the past three days have been soul-filling. One especially caught me. Day 44: The Courageous Choice.

Lysa addresses two kinds of courage. One we see in firefighters and other heroes who do brave things by slaying evil things. Then, the other is the courageous choice as she defines "is the decision to do the right thing even when it's unpopular, uncelebrated and probably even unnoticed."

That definition. (gulp)

That definition paired with Philippians 1:20. (double gulp)

I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death.

So, I decided to catch up an inventory of courageous choices I make to see if they bring a smile to the Father's face. When we make courageous choices, seen or unseen, we are living in faith and faith makes the Father happy! Read Hebrews 11:6 for extra credit.

I make a courageous choice to:

  • read my Bible and to read other books, like EMBRACED, to nourish my soul
  • be active and provide a way for others to be active
  • select clean music in my fitness classes
  • gather in pinky-prayer at the end of my cardio classes
  • send love note text messages to my children
  • pause the schedule to attend doctor appointments with my momma
  • promote missions, local, homefront and international on social media
  • wear a running skirt with confidence, because #modestishottest
  • plan health-conscious meals for my household
  • happily greeting business men into our home for their breakfast Bible study on Fridays
  • keep my mouth closed when it's not that important for me to verbally beat my chest
  • speak up when the situation demands a voice
  • find time to pull away from all the noise and recharge my inner battery
  • blogging for 100-ish days about what God drops in my heart even if my followers are less than 20
  • being ok living in my own skin without comparison to others

Everyday we choose to show up for that every day thing that we do is brave. We could throw up our hands in frustration because of the monotony of the mundane or the unappreciative feeling that sparks inside our chest when others appear flippant. Yet, we remain constant. We are not doormats, but we are gracious.

It's time to go catch up on your own courageous choice list, hand it over to God without being ashamed.

Oh Well Days

07.11.19.  The past two days have been Oh Well days. Today is sizing up as another.

Oh well.

It's not for a lack of faith nor for a lack of motivation that I don't resolve to seize the day with my usual zeal. My faith is still in tack. My "want to" is simmering just below the dark circles under my watery eyes. I've succumbed to my humanity...I have a cough, laryngitis and overall feeling of weakness.

Another day chalked up to "Oh well, I gave it a shot. I'll feel better, tomorrow."

So, I cancel fitness classes, let the laundry stay in the dryer, pray, read, rest, and watch historical stories on Netflix until sleep claims me, once again.

Remember those books called Chicken Soup for the Soul? Each story warmed your heart and lifted your spirit like the chicken noodle soup my hubby brought home from Chick-fil-A, last night. That's how I feel about the last couple of EMBRACED devos where Lysa TerKeurst serves biblical principles with personal experiences.

Because my noggin feels off-kilter and the pillow is calling through a fog slowly rolling in, I feel the need to quickly pass along some truth sparked from these daily devotions.

Celebrate small daily victories. Like battles won in a war, each victory is claiming ground for the territory of our souls. When we practice 2 Peter 1:5-9, we are strengthening our faith. How so? We add to or supplement our faith with things that we can work on, like choosing to do the right thing because it's the right thing (morals). Exercising self-control over whatever tends to trip us, builds our spiritual faith muscle. We are overcomers and our lives are a living testimony of God's mercy, grace and strength. People notice and are drawn to an overcoming life!

Change the way you think. In Romans 12:1-2, we are encouraged to renew our process of living by renewing our minds. Actively engaging God's best as truth, by default we are automatically replacing negative thought patterns and defeating lies. It's like filling up on something so nourishingly fresh so that there is no room for the old, stale stuff. Keep returning to the table and your very taste changes for that fresh flavor. Our minds are transformed to recognize and respond to His truth. What is that truth? The last line of Romans 8:38-39 encapsulates it: nothing will be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Jesus Christ our Lord.

Do you see how one fuels the other? We feed our minds on God's best stuff and, then, live it out victoriously and, then, celebrate with a grateful heart bringing us back to the feast, again!

So, while today may be another Oh, Well day for my body, I'm filling up and getting stronger in my soul!

Brokenness Mended Again

07.05.19.  Have you ever wanted to shake your fist to the heavens? Have hard times and insensitive behavior of others left you feeling kicked in the gut, broken-hearted and weak as water? Perhaps, you -like me-  have lifted a defiant chin, gritted your teeth and made a declaration as a modern version of Scarlett O'Hara.

"As God as my witness, they're not going to lick me. I'm going to live through this and when it's all over, I'll never be hungry, again."

I have been, there. Not so much the actual food dealio, but I have been there spiritually and emotionally.

It's funny-not-funny that when I have been at the point where it felt like my spirit was broken and there was no strength to be summoned, up from some abyss deep within this 5'3" frame, a resolve slowly starts to steam its way upward, builds pressure at the back of my throat until it finds my tongue and I snap out a charge at God.

"Are You listening? Do You see me? Why aren't You doing anything? Am I not Your child?"

If you read this with your finest idea of sarcasm and bitterness and frustration, you have come pretty close to how hard I symbolically shook my fist. I know He is big enough to take it. Honestly, I imagine He sighs at my outburst, "Finally, you're at a point of trusting My words instead of trusting your 'tools' to attempt to bury or heal your pain."

There is this one verse in Psalms 34 offered to bring comfort after someone dies and the loss is more than a loved one can bear. But, what if this same verse were applied when a person is face down with their soul shattered into thin, glass splinters and they are disillusioned with God?

If your heart is broken, you'll find God right there;
If you're kicked in the gut, He'll help you catch your breath.
Psalm 34:18 MSG

He knows me. He knows the motivation behind the frustration. He knows I know He's right there. Clearly I don't doubt His existence, because I'm hurling questions. I'm certainly not punishing Him with my silence. If perspective is reality, I think it's from a wounding of perceived abandonment that I and others angrily knit our brow and snarl our offenses as threats.

What do we do after that? What do you do after that?

This post could go deep while the word count climbs to trace back the wounding to the heart of the matter and analyze from all angles and quote famous and knowledgeable people. But, I don't want to go there.

I want to offer honest observation of my own brokenness-mended.

I keep coming back and turning over all my stuff to the living and loving Heavenly Father who has known me from before recorded time and chooses to continue to love while walking me through every alleged disappointment I have with Him. After exhausting my challenge and shaking in my anger, God speaks and I absorb His love surrounding me. He gently sweeps up all the splintered pieces mending my brokenness with His Word and with His peace.

Peace in chaos. This doesn't make sense.

I'm not suggesting I experience a cloud of cotton candy buffering my boo-boos as I float away in a totally relaxed state of mind while all my troubles disappear. On the contrary.

I've taken the freedom to note my interpretation of 1 Peter 5:7... "Give all your stuff to God, because He is most careful with you.

All my stuff I just blasted Him with is an ammunitions offload while the chaos is still swirling around. By faith, I'm giving all my stuff to Him to deal with knowing when He speaks, my anxiety is hefted by shoulders bigger than mine. When He speaks, wisdom for direction is dropped into my noggin. When He speaks, hope is ignited with promise. It is after He speaks when I have clarity to focus on the truth of His Words and move with intentionality.

What about you? Isn't it time to give all your stuff to Him? Are you done being angry with His way of doing things? He's got your best interest at heart and is ready when you are to talk it over. Are you ready to have your brokenness mended ...again?

Fitness and Your Witness

(First appeared as a guest contribution post on Sanctuary Ministry Wives - August 1, 2016 blog)

I’m in the ministry. I’ve got faith. Why do I need fitness?

Simply put, to honor God and bring Him glory in all areas of our lives.

The body, mind and soul all work together. One overlaps the other. Each affects the other. It makes sense that if Christ came to give us an abundantly satisfying life in body, mind and soul, the devil has a counter mission to steal, kill and destroy that body, mind and soul (John 10:10). But, God offers His strength to empower our choices, including our fitness and nutrition journey.

“My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9).

In 2012, my husband and I had transitioned from a state leadership position held for almost twelve years in our denomination to ministry more of missions-fundraising. Travel intensified from within one state to around the USA and the globe. Days and nights sitting in a car or plane or at meetings around the dinner table of high calorie and fatty meals were grabbed with convenience in mind. In no time, an on-the-go-sedentary life and poor nutritional choices piled on the weight. Additionally, we were genetically predisposed to health issues.

That December, my husband suffered a heart attack.

I sat up all night in a dark corner of his hospital room praying and observing the attentive cardiac team and listening to my honey’s breathing and all the various beeps from equipment monitoring his life on earth…his life with me. Being a Believer in God’s power for healing, I didn’t want to hear comforting words of well-meaning friends. I just wanted to sense the nearness of my Savior, Jesus Christ. And, I did.

A couple of weeks prior, God had been dealing with me about diet and exercise. Now, there was purpose. With our motivations being defined, we drove away from the hospital making a pact to pursue good health. We moved forward and have not stopped.

Allow me to offer 8 hard-learned suggestions to help you discover a healthier YOU.

(1) KNOW YOUR WHY. Knowing why you pursue something is much like knowing your calling to ministry. For it is in those difficult times, when it would be easier to throw up your hands in defeat, instead to wrangle resolve knowing what holds you to the commitment.

For us, the motivation to be physically fit was to live without fear and to live fully for God, family, ministry and ourselves.

(2) IT’S A LIFESTYLE. Shifting from years, even decades, with little to no thought toward the consequences of poor nutrition and no exercise has on your body, requires a complete change in mental process. You CAN do this! How bad do you want it?

I could make gravy and mac-n-cheese from scratch! I had to learn how to make low-to-no fat meals. We opted for food and beverages naturally sweetened. Discovering which fast food restaurants have something to offer was frustrating, at times. It’s not about restriction. It’s about the freedom of living and feeling better! And, when people start seeing the changes, you’ll know fitness has been your witness to draw others to Christ!

(3) FIND A FITNESS REGIME THAT MAKES YOU SMILE. The first TWO WEEKS of your new exercise regime will be the hardest. After the initial fatigue and muscle soreness, you may want to give up. Stick to it! Consistency is the key. If after a month (at least 3 times each week), you still do not like this particular brand of fitness, try something new for another month.

“If I’m moving, I’m winning!” This became and is still very much my fitness motto.

(4) FOOD PREPARATION. The two toughest challenges in a nutritional change are *not giving up and *preparing meals, especially if you have a busy lifestyle.

When I don’t prepare a menu or if I skip weekend food prep for the meals ahead, my hubby and I will end up making poor nutritional choices.

(5) HYDRATE. You simply must drink more water, especially during your fitness session. Tell-tale signs you may be dehydrated: Dry mouth and lips. Gently pinching skin beneath your bottom eyelashes, and it stays pinched. Feeling thirsty.

There are conflicting reports of just how much H2O a person should consume daily. MY TIPS: However much water you’re drinking, drink 8 ozs more. AND, let the first thing you consume in the morning and the last thing you consume each evening be a glass of water. AND, try flavoring your water with sugar-free mix-ins or fruit or essential oils.

(6) WELLNESS EXAM. If you can financially swing it -OR- if your health insurance covers a yearly exam, do it! You’ll have a good base of numbers to launch forward. Find out cholesterol, weight (ugh), blood pressure, thyroid (TSH) levels, etc, and then, you’ll know what type of nutrition to pursue. Don’t be overwhelmed if your physician suggests meds to control these areas. Typically, they opt for fitness and nutrition as their first prescription.

(7) ACCOUNTABILITY. Fitness can be fun. Fitness with friends is the best! Why? Laughter, support, and celebration! Fitness friendships spur one another on with encouragement and a healthy dose of competition… or, if you konk-out, someone is there to call 9-1-1! C’mon, I’m just kidding!

(8) CHEAT MEAL. Sure, those cravings for chips and fudge brownies will still be there, but it’s important not to destroy your hard work for a steady diet of them. Go ahead! Enjoy a cheat meal to get it out of your system! Then, get back on track. More than likely, you will notice the sluggish feeling these cheat foods induce.

I am happy to report my preacher-man is doing great! He gets me moving when I have a case of the Idontwannas! We brought down cholesterol levels significantly. Together, we run 5K and 10K races and half-marathons. Finding new places to hike while traveling for ministry is fun!

I never thought fitness would be a platform to share the Gospel, but it has become an integral part of weekly ministry for me! I became a REFIT® Revolution Instructor and absolutely love helping others to pursue a lifestyle of fitness and nutrition! FITNESS IS MY WITNESS!

It bears repeating, ministry, faith and fitness go together. YOU can do this!

My Reverse Bucket List

First birthday!
At the Big Five-O, one starts to be reflective.

I was the firstborn to Mary Alice and Samuel St. Clair Keenan and named Samalee Rose after my father and a grandmother and, possibly an aunt. I'm fairly positive I would have been a "Jr." had I been a boy. Born on June 28, 1964, at 8:08am weighing 8 lbs, 8 oz and was 18" long (all stretched out) my mom said I resembled a shoebox. The good people of Ferriday, Louisiana, in Concordia Parish (there are no counties in my home state) never knew what energy had been released on that day!

My first 50 years have been jam-packed with travel and culture and with the brilliance of laughter and the dull ache of mournful sobs. I say, there is no better way to experience every ounce of life squeezed into a cup and enjoyed than with those dearest to your heart. My husband says my life's motto should be "Let's Go!" YES, HE TRULY GETS ME! If the past is a prediction of the future, I believe the next 50 will be just as full as the previous! So, with that I have tried to encapsulate 50 years with 50 bullet points in a listing of have-dones, instead of to-dos! With the glorious exception of 1-4, there is no order of importance.

MY REVERSE BUCKET LIST...at half-a-century old!

  1. God answered a young girl’s request for her future hubby to have green eyes when I married Terry Gene Allen on August 23, 1985.
  2. Although considered a “high risk pregnancy,” I gave birth to Jonathan Dane Allen, the joy of my heart, on February 20, 1991. I danced with my son on his wedding day, September 14, 2013.
  3. With my hubby, we raised a son who loves God, still loves us, adores his wife, Emily Marie, and is in the ministry!
  4. While at a kids camp in Woodworth, Louisiana, I asked Jesus to forgive my sins and be my Savior in 1974!
  5. As an elementary student, I lived in Edinburgh, Scotland.
  6. As an adult, I traveled to Denmark with a caffeinated team of students and adults.
  7. Marveled at the famed White Cliffs of Dover from a ferry in England.
  8. Walked the pristine streets and footbridges in Holland.
  9. Zip-Lined and Cave Tubed in the rainforest of Belize on Thanksgiving Day.
  10. Sleighed in a horse-drawn wagon to celebrate Christmas Day with family and strangers at a barn in Montana dining on Rocky Mountain Oysters and huckleberry coffee.
  11. Celebrated New Year’s in La Paz, Bolivia. Elevation: <12,000 ft. sipping warm goat milk and cheese cracker rolls.
  12. Learned to snow ski in Aspen and water ski on D’Arbonne.
  13. Learned to scuba dive with my son in Cozumel.
  14. Ice Skated in Rockefeller Plaza, NYC.
  15. Climbed ALL, repeat.. ALL the steps from the base to the crown in the Statue of Liberty.
  16. Experienced the grandeur of the Grand Canyon’s rim while riding a horse.
  17. Kissed my hubby at sunset on the Ganges River in Calcutta, India, while floating on a small wooden vessel.
  18. Like it was secret nobody else knew, I encouraged my son to listen for the sizzling of the sun setting into the ocean while cruising in the middle of the ocean.
  19. Have lived in Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Oklahoma and Tennessee. Have been to 40 of our nation’s 50 states and Washington D.C.! Only 10 more to go!
  20. Loaded my Mother, Mother-in-Law and Sister-in-Law into a car for a fast road trip to the Wild West where we rode horses up a mountain, saw snow in summer and stayed in a historic hotel!
  21. Rafted part of the Colorado River, twice.
  22. Rafted part of the Rio Grande River in New Mexico, with my 70 year old momma!
  23. Camped and hiked in the Great Smokey Mountains, in the Cumberland Mountains and in the Rocky Mountains (where we had a snowball fight in August)!
  24. In Colorado, made my son’s dream of climbing a mountain come true. After reaching the top and standing in a field of flowers, it began to sleet and snow in the summer!
  25. Peddled a bike 16 miles (with my hubby and 7 year old son) next to the Colorado River in Glenwood Canyon and climbed to Hanging Lake midway during the ride wearing flat, cute shoes. My feet paid the price of me looking cute, that day.
  26. Hiked “The M” above Missoula, Montana, with dear friends.
  27. Wept like a child on the shoulder of a friend standing on the side of a mountain in Glacier International Peace Park on the one-month anniversary of my hubby surviving a heart attack.
  28. Visited Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming where buffalo came close to our car and, later, witnessed a Grizzly with her two cubs on a green knoll.
  29. Peered through a Park Ranger’s binoculars at a Black Bear with her three cubs napping up in the green canopy of a tree in Cade’s Cove, Tennessee.
  30. Got dangerously (and stupidly) close to a hungry, young Black Bear looking for a pic-a-nic basket in that same cove.
  31. Went spelunking in Salt Petre Cave in Grassy Cove, Tennessee, for eight hours with 45 students and staffers. Would do it, again!
  32. Repelled the 160’ drop beside the beautiful Ozone Falls near Crab Orchard, Tennessee.
  33. Youth Pastored with hubby from 1983 until 2000 in 5 churches and 3 states reaching students for Christ and raising bucks for missions! Best Job!
  34. Senior Pastored with hubby for a blazing 10 months in Lebanon, TN, prior to…
  35. …Terry and I accepting the appointment as District Youth Directors for the Tennessee Assemblies of God for the next 11+ years! Next best job!
  36. Taught many students to play piano, to sing, to lead worship and to lead a worship team. Later, watched some of those students teach others.
  37. Almost a portion of every summer of my life has been spent in “Neverland” (a.k.a. kids or youth camp).
  38. Have partnered with Terry in working together in ministry 3 years longer than we’ve been married!
  39. Dates aren’t really sacred cows with us and we’ve spent 28 wedding anniversaries, somewhere and not always on the actual date, together at “Neverland,” with “The Lion King” on Broadway, on the “Vineyard,” and yelling “Boomer Sooner” at an Oklahoma football game.
  40. Skipped church on a Sunday morning in December to attend a Tennessee Titans football game...on the 50 yard line...while it snowed...with a Native American Indian and my hubby…for free! Oddly enough, it was already on my To-Do Bucket List.
  41. I set a new year’s goal and actually accomplished it! <and the crowd goes wild!>
  42. Slowly ran a 10K and crossed the finish line hand-in-hand with my hubby!
  43. Caught over 30 trout in one day and ate 1 grilled over hot coals for lunch.
  44. The actor, Tom Hanks, asked me for BBQ chicken on the set of Castaway in Memphis.
  45. Ate haggis. Ate the top taste-bud layer of cow tongue. Ate octopus. Ate lobster. Ate crawfish. Ate rattlesnake. Ate shark.
  46. Reduced cholesterol almost 100 points by a miracle of God!
  47. At age 13, recorded an album with a singing group! I sounded like a chipmunk.
  48. At age 27, sang on the stage of the Grand Old Opry in Nashville with the first TN Assemblies of God State Youth Choir. Technically, my son has been on that stage, too. I was pregnant!
  49. Started a fruit butter business, Samalee’s Butters, but was too busy in ministry to keep it going. Pumpkin, Apple, Strawberry, Orchard and Banana Nut tasted wonderful! However, Apricot and Pear were exquisite and Plum tasted like Christmas in a jar!
  50. From January to my 50th birthday (TODAY) in 2014, I have run 205 miles and will run many more "miles to go before I sleep."
CHEERS to the next 50 with family & friends! Happy Birthday to Me!

Happy #HeartAttackComeback Day!

Terry. 1 month
after heart attack
Glacier Park - MT
December 18th is a new major holiday
for the Allen Clan!
It's Happy Heart Day!
It's Terry-Survived-a-Heart-Attack Day!
It's #HeartAttackComeback Day!

What?! You didn't hear? On December 18, 2012, my hubby --Terry Allen-- hadn't been feeling great; however, had been keeping that fact from me for about two weeks. That morning when Terry went for a run, he didn't get very far and knew something was seriously wrong. The situation only worsened and by evening, he called me from a parking lot screaming in pain to meet him at the hospital because the ambulance had been called. Our son, Dane, and his then-fiancé, Emily, quickly met us there.

T was life-flighted to Vanderbilt Hospital where a cardiac team quickly accessed his problem and saved my husband's life. I sat up all night in a dark corner praying, observing the attentive team and listening to the various beeps and breathing of my honey. Being a Believer in God's power for healing, I didn't need to hear comforting words of well-meaning friends, I just wanted to sense the nearness of my Savior, Jesus Christ. And, I did.

Drew & Daney.
Gotta find joy somewhere!
I can recall many details of those next few days. Too many to list. I remember waking in the waiting room to the rustling of a paper bag as our dear friend and pastor, Drew, handed me a cup of hot tea and said, "Wow. You look rough." I remember Aaron "Smiley" Farmer (my summer son) walking around the corner in the waiting room just as my emotions and fatigue collided. He brought my fave hazelnut coffee and bagels. I remember Daney fielding questions on the cellphone and becoming a man in my eyes. I remember driving away from Vandy with T riding shotgun. Kinda hard to drive with your eyes full of tears. I remember waking up early and sitting quietly with "mah mayn" in the glow of the Christmas tree reading our eReader versions of the Bible.

This year, 2013, has been Terry's #HeartAttackComeback year. In celebration of his life and the one year anniversary, I asked (um...really, I told) him when he was finished writing his post on the day before, I wanted to include it on my site, too!

Glacier Park - MT
Today I ran and walked 13.1 miles for 14 reasons... (or 13.1 reasons)

Mile 1 - Gratefulness. I am just happy to be alive.

Mile 2 - Fear...For one solid year I have thought about having another heart attack. Every morning it was one of my first thoughts. Every time I took my daily medicine. With every pain has come a whisper of my demise and I am flat sick of it. I will not be controlled by a spirit of fear. Period.

Mile 3 - 12/18 is the heart attack anniversary and I thought it would be great to do it before I go to the doctor tomorrow.

Mile 4 - I set a goal to run a half marathon by the end of 2013, and it was within my grasp. I honestly didn't know if my body could take it, but I refused to give up on the goal and not at
Terry & Drew.
Sunday following heart attack
least try.

Mile 5 - For everyone who struggles with depression. For the darkness that tells you your life is over...Don't believe it.

Mile 6 - For my Hebrews Eleven Life Group (a.k.a LifeNet). I wanted to knock out a hope target for them.

Mile 7 - For my Pastor and best friend, Andrew Wharton, who sat in the car and prayed for me, followed the ambulance, lobbied to get on the life flight and stayed up all night in the hospital with me. ICU will never be the same.

Mile 8 - For every person that has slugged it out this year to change and comeback from addiction, bad health or another life struggle.

Mile 9 - For all my encouraging friends who prayed and took the time to visit, call & care.
T & me.

Mile 10 - Because I'm not a quitter.

Mile 11 - Eleven was for my mother and family. My father died in her arms from a heart attack afew years ago and when I had my episode she had to relive those memories. This one was for her peace, happiness and to give another punch in the face to worry for making her cry.

Mile 12 - I ran it for Dane Allen. No kid should have worry about his dad losing his life so early. I ran it to punch worry in the face for making my son uncomfortable. Don't mess with my kid.
T & me.
At Dane & Emily's wedding
September 14, 2013

Mile 13 - I ran it for Samalee Allen and for all of her incredible sacrifice this year in helping me get healthy. Honestly, I also wanted to destroy any fear she may deal with of losing her husband. We are one and I will not stand for fear in the eyes of my wife.

Mile 13.1 - I ran it because there is "no sweeter name than the name of Jesus. No sweeter name that I've ever known." - Kari Jobe has sung that to me a hundred times this year and I believe it. "You are the light in my heart and my soul. You are the light to the darkness around me." Without Jesus and his help I would not be here. This whole journey is a testament to His grace and mercy. The finish was for Him.

I love you, Terry Allen.
I love you 'til the day I die.
Together, we can conquer the world in love.
You and I.

Happy #HeartAttackComeback Day!

Book Review: Willing to Walk on Water

Willing to Walk on Water:
Step Out in Faith and let God
Work Miracles Through Your Life
by Caroline Barnett
Tyndale Momentum, 2013

Obedient Faith may not be popular. Still, it is required when serving and pleasing our Heavenly Father. Obedient Faith is trusting Him when it does not seem practical, convenient or safe. Obedient Faith is like walking in a God-Fog, where each blind step taken is done so believing His Word as it takes courage to take another and realizing He's trusting you to help build the Kingdom!

Caroline is married to Matthew Barnett and together they co-pastor the Dream Center of Los Angeles, a "volunteer driven organization which finds and fills the needs of over 50,000 individuals and families each month."

Not only does this book relate history of a young, urban ministry, but it is a collection of faith-forward vision casting whereby the hopeless receive Jesus, acceptance, full bellies, skills and hope.

"Use your influence and initiate change where you see a need."

"When God puts something on your heart to do
and you follow willingly, you can walk on water."

"There is no better confidence booster than knowing
you are living aligned with God's Word."

"God is on your side. He wants you to accomplish more
 than you could ever imagine."

Why did I purchase this book? In the late 1990's, my honey and I took a small band of cream-of-the-crop senior high school students to serve at the Dream Center for one week. I still refer to and value faith lessons gleaned while I was there.

My life is enriched by the faith of Caroline and the countless volunteer stories, most of which we will never have the honor to read. Again, I am challenged to "find a hurt and heal it, [and] find a need and meet it." I believe your zeal to serve others and God will be renewed while you are reading. And, while you are reading, ask God to be involved in planting ideas to serve in your spirit.

"God does not want fear to dictate our steps of willingness.
He wants us to be obedient."  For more info, click here ---> Caroline Barnett
